What You'll Learn
Alipay is accepted almost everywhere in China — from 7-Eleven to high-speed rail. Here's how to use it as a visitor:
- Download and set up Alipay with your international phone number
- Use the "Tourist Mode" designed specifically for foreign visitors
- Link a Visa, Mastercard, or Amex card
- Pay with barcode at any merchant
- Understand transaction limits and fees
Download & Register Alipay
Before You Travel
Download Alipay before arriving in China, ideally from your home country's app store. The app is the same globally — there's no separate international version.
iOS (iPhone):
- Open the App Store and search "Alipay"
- Download the official app with the blue icon and Chinese characters (支付宝)
- Open the app and tap "Sign Up" or "注册"
- Select your country code and enter your international phone number
- Enter the verification code sent to your phone
- Set a login password and complete registration

Android:
- Download from Google Play or alipay.com directly
- Follow the same registration steps as iOS
Alipay has a Mainland China version and an International version. For tourists, either works — but the Mainland version (支付宝) has broader merchant support. Download from your country's app store and it will default to the correct version.
Enable Tourist Mode (外籍用户)
What is Tourist Mode?
Alipay's Tourist Mode (also called "Foreign User" mode) gives international visitors full access to payment features without a Chinese phone number or Chinese bank account. It was specifically designed for travelers.
Activating Tourist Mode
- Open Alipay and go to Me → Settings → Language
- Switch the app language to English (if not already)
- Go to Me → ID Card (or "My Identity")
- Select "Foreign Tourist Registration"
- Upload a photo of your passport's data page
- Take a selfie for facial recognition verification
- Wait for approval — usually instant, occasionally up to 24 hours

Complete tourist mode verification before arriving in China. Processing time can be slower if you're already in China and the system detects you're registering from a mainland IP address.
Link Your International Card
Supported Cards
Alipay accepts the following international cards for tourist accounts:
- Visa — best compatibility
- Mastercard — widely accepted
- American Express — most merchants
- JCB, Diners Club — select merchants
Linking Your Card
- Go to Me → My Cards (or "Bank Cards")
- Tap "Add Card"
- Enter your card number, expiry date, and CVV
- Enter your billing address (must match your card statement exactly)
- Confirm with your card's 3D Secure password if prompted

The billing address you enter must match exactly what's on file with your bank. A single character difference will cause the card to fail. If linking fails, check with your bank first before trying again.
Transaction Limits
International cards on tourist Alipay accounts have the following limits:
- Per transaction: up to ¥5,000 (~$700)
- Daily spending: up to ¥15,000 (~$2,000)
- Annual limit: ¥50,000 (~$7,000)
These limits reset annually and are sufficient for most travelers.
Charges appear in Chinese Yuan (CNY) on your card statement. Your bank will handle the currency conversion at their standard exchange rate. Some banks charge 1-3% foreign transaction fees — check with your issuer before your trip.
Making Payments
At a Store
Most merchants in China display a QR code scanner. Here's how to pay:
- Open Alipay and tap the "Pay" button on the home screen (or tap "Scan" to scan the merchant's code)
- A barcode appears — show it to the cashier
- The cashier scans your barcode
- Confirm the amount on your screen
- Payment is complete — you'll see a green checkmark

Paying by Scanning
If the merchant doesn't scan your code, you can scan theirs:
- Tap "Scan" on the Alipay home screen
- Point your camera at the merchant's QR code
- Enter the amount shown by the merchant
- Confirm and pay
Alipay is accepted at: convenience stores (7-Eleven,全家), supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, metro, taxis, shops, online orders, movie tickets, and more. If a merchant has a card machine, they almost certainly accept Alipay.
Peer-to-Peer Transfers
To send money to a friend or pay someone directly:
- Tap the "+ Send" button on the home screen
- Select "To Friend" or enter their Alipay account/phone number
- Enter the amount and a message
- Confirm with your password or biometrics
Troubleshooting
Card Declined
- Verify your billing address matches your bank statement exactly
- Contact your bank to enable international/China transactions
- Try a different card (Visa has the highest success rate)
- Wait 30 minutes and try again — repeated failed attempts temporarily lock the feature
Tourist Mode Not Available
- Make sure your Alipay is updated to the latest version
- Check that your account is set to your home country during registration
- Some older accounts may not have the tourist registration option — create a new account if needed
QR Code Not Scanning
- Ensure your camera has permission to access Alipay
- Clean your camera lens — important in dusty environments
- Hold the phone steady 15-30cm from the QR code
- Check that the merchant's code is for Alipay (blue), not WeChat Pay (green) or another platform
Before confirming any payment, always verify the amount shown on your screen matches what the merchant quoted. Never confirm a payment without seeing the exact amount first.
